Natalie Duncan

Counsellor & Psychotherapist | Harmful Sexual Behaviour & Sexual Offending

I offer confidential, non-judgemental therapy for people concerned about their sexual behaviour, including harmful sexual behaviour and sexual offending.

Reaching out for help when you are worried about your sexual thoughts or behaviour can be extremely difficult.

You may be frightened about what your behaviour means, experiencing intense shame, or worried about the impact on your partner, family, work or future. Perhaps something has already happened, and you know you need help, or you may be concerned about where your behaviour could lead if it continues.

Fear of being judged can make it difficult to speak openly. But avoiding the problem can also allow patterns to continue.

Natalie works with people experiencing harmful sexual behaviours and sexual offending, providing a space where difficult behaviour can be discussed honestly while maintaining a clear focus on responsibility, safety and change.

Support for Harmful Sexual Behaviour

Natalie can work with people who are concerned about their sexual behaviour, including those who have offended or are worried that their behaviour is becoming harmful.

Therapy can provide an opportunity to understand:

  • What is driving or maintaining the behaviour
  • Patterns, triggers and situations associated with increased risk
  • The role of shame, secrecy and avoidance
  • Emotional regulation and coping
  • Relationships, attachment and intimacy
  • The impact of earlier experiences and trauma
  • Taking responsibility without becoming overwhelmed by shame
  • Developing safer and healthier patterns of behaviour
  • Building a life in which offending or harmful behaviour is less likely to recur

Therapy offers space to understand what may be driving or maintaining these behaviours, recognise patterns and triggers, and develop greater awareness and choice. The aim is to help you move towards safer, healthier patterns and meaningful, lasting change.

“Will I Be Judged If I Tell a Therapist What I’ve Done?”

This fear can prevent people from seeking help.

Natalie understands that people are more than the worst thing they have done or the behaviour they are struggling with. Her previous professional experience means she is comfortable having conversations about behaviour that may be difficult, shame-filled or challenging to disclose.

You will be treated with dignity and respect while being supported to look honestly at your behaviour, its consequences and what needs to change.

As with all therapy, confidentiality has limits where there are safeguarding concerns or a serious risk of harm. These boundaries can be discussed clearly with you so you understand them from the outset.

From Probation Work to Psychotherapy

Before training as a counsellor and psychotherapist, Natalie worked as a probation officer.

This experience continues to have a significant influence on her therapeutic work. She became accustomed to working with people facing complex circumstances and developed considerable experience around risk, trauma, shame, behaviour and the process of change.

Importantly, it taught her to see the person behind the behaviour while remaining able to address responsibility and risk.

Natalie subsequently completed an MA in Counselling & Psychotherapy and has undertaken specialist StopSo training. She is StopSo trained and registered and has additional training in trauma therapy.

This combination of psychotherapy training, specialist harmful sexual behaviour training and her previous experience within probation gives Natalie a particularly relevant background for working with people concerned about their sexual behaviour.

Understanding the Person as Well as the Behaviour

Natalie works integratively and has a particular interest in attachment and childhood experiences.

For some people, understanding sexual behaviour also involves exploring relationships, intimacy, emotional regulation, shame, rejection, trauma or ways of coping that developed much earlier in life.

By exploring the different experiences and factors that may be influencing your behaviour, therapy can help you understand patterns more clearly and develop new ways of responding that support safer, healthier choices.

What Is Therapy With Natalie Like?

Natalie is warm, straightforward and non-judgemental.

She doesn’t work as a distant or “blank slate” therapist. She believes effective therapy requires genuine human connection alongside the ability to have honest and sometimes challenging conversations.

You don’t need to know exactly how to explain what has happened before you attend. The first step can simply be acknowledging that something needs to change.

Natalie will work collaboratively with you to understand what support you need and regularly review the work with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get therapy if I have committed a sexual offence?

Yes. Natalie works with harmful sexual behaviour and sexual offending. Therapy provides a confidential professional space to understand your behaviour, take responsibility and work towards safer patterns.

What if I haven’t offended but I’m worried about my behaviour?

You do not need to wait until something becomes more serious before seeking help. If you’re concerned about sexual thoughts, urges or behaviours and want to understand and change them, seeking specialist support early can be important.

Will everything I tell you be confidential?

Therapy is confidential, but confidentiality is not absolute. There are circumstances involving safeguarding or serious risk of harm where information may need to be shared. Natalie will explain the boundaries of confidentiality so you know where you stand.

Do I have to tell you everything in the first session?

No. The first session is an opportunity to begin understanding what has brought you to therapy and what you need help with. Natalie understands that shame and fear can make disclosure difficult and will work with you at an appropriate pace while being clear about any information needed to assess risk and safety.
