Emma Bisdee

Emma Bisdee Betrayal Trauma

Emma Bisdee

Emma is an Integrative Counsellor with particular experience supporting partners who have experienced betrayal trauma following infidelity, sexual betrayal, pornography use, sex addiction, secrecy or repeated deception.

Throughout her training and since qualifying, Emma has worked with many clients struggling with the emotional aftermath of betrayal. She understands that discovery can affect far more than trust in a relationship. Partners may find themselves questioning their memories and judgement, experiencing intrusive thoughts or rumination, struggling with anxiety and hypervigilance, or feeling that they have lost confidence in themselves and in the future they thought they had.

Emma offers a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space in which clients can begin to make sense of what has happened without feeling pressured to make immediate decisions about their relationship. Whether you are trying to cope with the initial shock of discovery, living with ongoing uncertainty or trickle truth, questioning whether to stay or leave, or beginning to rebuild your life and sense of self, Emma will work alongside you at a pace that feels manageable.

How Emma works

As an Integrative Counsellor, Emma draws primarily on person-centred and psychodynamic approaches. At the heart of her work is the belief that each person is the expert on their own life and that a trusting therapeutic relationship can provide the safety needed to explore difficult emotions and experiences.

Betrayal can leave people feeling disconnected from themselves and unsure of what they can trust. Emma supports clients in developing a greater understanding of their emotional responses, reconnecting with their own needs and instincts, and gradually rebuilding confidence and a sense of emotional safety.

Alongside counselling, Emma is also a Medical Hypnotherapist, EFT practitioner and Mindfulness Teacher. Where appropriate and with the client’s agreement, she can draw upon mindfulness, EFT and other grounding approaches to help manage anxiety, overwhelming thoughts and emotional distress. This can be particularly valuable when betrayal trauma is being experienced not only emotionally but physically, through tension, disrupted sleep, heightened alertness or difficulty settling.

Supporting partners beyond individual counselling

Emma is also a facilitator of Cherry Tree’s Betrayal Trauma Support Group, supporting partners at different stages of discovery and recovery. This work gives her an ongoing understanding of the questions and difficulties that commonly emerge after betrayal, from coping with repeated discoveries and uncertainty to rebuilding self-trust and deciding what recovery might look like.

Emma recognises that healing does not necessarily mean staying in a relationship or leaving it. Her role is to provide a safe space in which you can begin to understand what has happened, recognise what you need, and make choices about your future from a more grounded and informed place.
